About
Social Learning Group
A Social Learning Group is a group of people who learn together from the same material, such as an online course or a book. The group meets regularly to support each other and enhance their learning experience. By joining a Social Learning Group, you can enjoy the following benefits:
You can get help from your peers when you have a question or a difficulty. Your peers are in the best position to help you because they have recently learned the same material and can relate to your challenges.
You can reinforce your own learning by helping others. Teaching what you have learned to someone else is a proven way to deepen your understanding and retention of the material.
You can increase your motivation and commitment by being part of a group. Having a regular schedule and a supportive community can help you overcome procrastination and distractions.
You can learn from different perspectives and experiences. Hearing how others approach the material and what they find interesting or useful can enrich your own learning and spark new ideas.
Group Meetings
A typical Social Learning Group meeting lasts for 2 to 3 hours and consists of four parts:
A presentation: One of the group members gives a short presentation (up to 15 minutes) on a topic related to the material or on how to learn more effectively. The presentation aims to educate and inspire the group members.
A self-study session: The group members study the material individually for 45 minutes (or longer, depending on the length of the meeting). During this time, they can ask each other questions or offer help if needed.
A break: The group members take a 15-minute break to socialize and relax. This is an important part of the meeting, as it helps to build rapport and trust among the group members.
Another self-study session: The group members resume their individual study for another 30 minutes (or longer, depending on the length of the meeting). They can continue to interact with each other as before.
A closing: The group members share one or two things that they learned during the meeting. This helps to reinforce their learning and to appreciate each other’s progress.
The time allocation for each part of the meeting can vary depending on the length of the meeting and the preferences of the group members. Here is a summary of possible time allocations for groups of 2, 2.5 and 3 hours long:
Presentation: 15 minutes
Self-Study Session: 45 minutes, 1 hour, 1 hour and 15 minutes
Break: 15 minutes
Self-Study Session: 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour
Closing: 15 minutes
